The Plettenberg Bay Bridge, designed by Vela VKE’s Cape Town office, has won two awards. A commendation from the SAACE Glenrand MIB Awards for a project less than R5 million and the Steel Award in the bridge category from the SAISC.

National Route N17 between Klipspruit Valley Road and Nasrec Road

The project involves the design and construction of the N17 Link Road between Klipspruit Valley Road (at Soweto) and Nasrec Road, including the upgrading and widening of Nasrec Road between Soweto Highway and Main Reef Road south-east of Johannesburg. The newly constructed N17 passes through existing mine slime dumps, which was also utilised for fill material.

Rehabilitation of the N5 road between Paul Roux and Senekal

Rehabilitation and widening to 4 lanes per direction of National Route R21 Section 1 & 2

Upgrading and improvement of National Route R21 Section 1 & 2, the gateway to South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria, from the OR Tambo International Airport.  National Route R21 is one of the busiest and congested routes in Gauteng and is being upgraded from a two lane per direction freeway to a four lane per direction freeway with improved access and freeway lighting along it’s full length.

Rehabilitation of National Route N5 Section 4 between Senekal and Vaalpensspruit

All aspects of road rehabilitation and upgrading were included in this project.  Major geometrical improvements, four different pavement designs and several innovative drainage improvement methods formed part of the project.
