Gautrain Rapid Rail Link Viaducts

The detailed design of seven railway viaducts totalling 4.3km in the southern section of the prestigious Gautrain project.

The viaducts include those between Marlboro station and O.R. Tambo Airport varying in length from 230m to 1475m.

Construction consisted of glued precast sequential segments with weights of up to 55tons. Prestressing is both external and internal.

The longest is viaduct 15, which stretches through Rhodesfield Station, the R21 airport interchange and ends in the O.R. Tambo Airport Station. Design included rail-structure interaction and rolling stock dynamic analysis.

Vela VKE's role includes project management, design management, bridge design, hydrology and hydraulic design as well as electrical and environmental advice.
